Apple has filed a patent application with the US Patent & Trade Office for a foldable iPhone that could be in the works for september 2018.

The foldable iPhone will have a single sheet of a foldable display. The patent covers all types of displays, LCD, OLED, and microLED.

Apple’s new contraption “may be formed from shape memory alloy or amorphous metal and may have openings to facilitate bending.” Ray Wong, Mashable’s senior tech correspondent, has his doubts, since a bendable phone and tablet would make it pretty difficult to both incorporate a long-lasting battery and create a design that’s aesthetically pleasing.

Apple isn’t using the Samsung Display to develop a foldable display, because the company could leak the custom technology to Samsung Electronics. The latter company is reportedly working on a flexible phone, currently known as the ‘Galaxy X’. Samsung could launch the device at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next year.

In 2017 Apple didn’t launch all of its new iPhones at the same time. The iPhone X came one month after the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus nobody knows if the delay was intentional or not.

Apple may have benefitted from pent up demand for the iPhone X, and it may have sold more iPhone 8 handsets than it would have if the iPhone X had been available sooner.

Apple could launch one new iPhone SE in the spring and two new iPhones in the autumn of 2018.

In spring of 2018 you will be able to get an iPhone X-style handset for less – if Chinese-language Economic Daily article from October 2017 is to be believed.

This ‘budget’ iPhone X-style iPhone is codenamed Hangzhou, while the more expensive version is codenamed Lisboa, according to Economic Daily.

This claims from the Economic Daily seem to be backed up by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who also claims that Apple will introduce a cheaper iPhone that will feature many of the same features as the iPhone X including a bezel-less display. In order to keep costs down this unit will feature a LCD-TFT screen and fewer pixels.

Two of the 2018 iPhones will feature a OLED screen, like the current iPhone X, but one will have an LCD-TFT.

The Bell (via The Investor), quoting anonymous industry sources, claimed in May of 2017 that Apple and Samsung had signed a deal for the supply of 5.28in and 6.46in sized OLED panels for the 2018.

There will be face ID on all models but there will also be a in-screen Touch ID.
